Heaven And Hell: Hip Hop's Difficulty With Christianity

Heaven And Hell: Hip Hop's Difficulty With Christianity
From Mase to Lecrae and No Malice, both listeners and emcees often have a hard time reconciling Hip Hop with a message of Christianity.
Before rappers had multimillion-dollar endorsement deals with shoe manufacturers and makeup companies, it was commonplace to see even the most mainstream emcees speak out on controversial issues. In the wake of Hip Hop’s commercial boom from the late 90’s through the early aughts, and the subsequent commercial drought we’re witnessing now, most mainstream emcees on major labels sidestep anything remotely controversial.

Moments such as Lupe Fiasco calling President Obama
the biggest terrorist or Kanye West quipping, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” are now generally the exception and not the rule. In an effort to create dialogue on issues many of the most popular and commercially successful emcees are afraid to touch, HipHopDX is launching a “Taboo Series” of editorials. Whether readers agree or disagree with the opinions brought forth, our hope is to play a small part in returning the level of discourse in Hip Hop back to the days when mainstream, major label, commercially viable artists weren’t afraid to tackle uncomfortable and thought-provoking subjects.

From September 5 through September 7, HipHopDX will post these Taboo Series editorials daily, addressing topics the top mainstream rappers no longer talk about. Do you agree with the choices? Do you agree that such subjects have become taboo for Top 40 emcees? Weigh in, starting today

Heaven And Hell: Hip Hop's Difficulty With Christianity

Just a little over eight years ago, after leaving the game to pursue a higher calling, Mase released his third studio album, Welcome Back. Since then, the Harlem emcee, noticeably unable to decide between pulpits and popping collars, has resurfaced a few times on your favorite urban radio station. First alongside 50 Cent and his G-Unit constituents, then on a few remixes by Drake and Wale to name a few. And now, after a performance at Hot 97’s Summer Jam concert this spring, it appears the former Bad Boy may be down with M-M-Maybach Music (in my sexiest voice). While I don't doubt Mason Betha’s love for Jesus Christ or even his road to Damascus conversion, he does appear to struggle with balancing Hip Hop and holiness.

Whether “M.A. dollar sign. E” continues to keep one Gucci loafer in the game and one out, the bigger question remains: Why are Hip Hop and Christianity mutually exclusive? What is so inherently bad about the genre that once rappers find God they must make their way to the nearest fluorescent exit sign? Fellow reformed Bad Boys Loon and Shyne also ran for the hills (literally) once they found salvation. It seems rappers aren’t able or given permission to continue making dope music with a different message. Admittedly, that might be a tall order given the climate of the culture. Hip Hop often, but not always, promotes living in the “Y.O.L.O.” moment with quick money, arrogance, promiscuity and dishonesty. While Christianity represents principles like self-control, love, patience, joy, honesty, humility and self-denial. It’s tough to reconcile the two.

A Paradox Of Rebellion And Religion

“I walked into church with a snapback / And they tellin’ me that’s a no-no / That’s backwards / And I lack words / For these actors called pastors / All these folks is hypocrites / And that’s why I ain’t at church / Truthfully / I’m just doin’ me / And I don’t wanna face no scrutiny / As long as the church keep wildin’ out / I can justify all my foolish deeds…” –Lecrae, “Church Clothes.”
My strong belief in Christ has led to many internal debates about my faith and if the things I consume with my eyes and ears are in line. Something seems off when my iPod goes from Meek Mills’ "Amen" to Donnie McKlurklin’s “Holy.” There is nothing godlike about the music I most enjoy. The Hip Hop I adore—the music I fell in love with in the ‘80s and bumped on my pink boombox in the back of chemistry class and lowered when my parents came into the room—was about being a rebel. It was about breaking rules, pushing boundaries and sometimes being disrespectful. And I’ve always had trouble bridging the gap between these things and my faith. Quite honestly, I think some rappers may have trouble with the paradox as well.
For an artist like No Malice of The Clipse (who as part of his recent re-dedication to Christ threw a funeral service retiring his former moniker, Malice) this kind of disparity will likely make it difficult to balance words on his new solo project, Hear Ye Him! It takes a lot of heart, courage and skill to spout a message of life to a culture largely drowning in death. But that’s what Christian rappers like Lacrae are doing in their music. Clear about their platform, these emcees have drawn the proverbial line in the sand, declared “Team Jesus” and aligned their verbs and nouns with the heart of God. But there are some emcees out there that are leery of the “Christian rapper” label and the lackluster sales and stigma often attached to the sub-culture? Even Lacrae, who for the record is super nice on the mic, is uncomfortable with the “Christian rapper” title, describing himself as just an emcee—authentically Christian and authentically Hip Hop. Jin, BET’s Freestyle Friday Hall of Famer and former Ruff Ryder, seems hesitant to officially adopt the title as well. He addresses the conundrum in a recent YouTube video. If you’re a rapper who happens to also be a Christian, does that make you a Christian rapper? I don’t think so. We don’t call Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), Beanie Sigel or Q-Tip Muslim rappers. They’re just rappers who speak truthfully about their experiences and beliefs—one of which happens to be the tenets of Islam. Why the double standard? Why the greater acceptance of Islam in Hip Hop? Perhaps Islam, a less mainstream faith in this country (one third of the country identifies themselves as Christian, while less than 1% identify themselves as Muslim) is viewed as a more revolutionary faith, which is more in line with what Hip Hop largely represents.

The Coded Language Of “Christian Rap”

“I been gone away from home for so long / Seems like everything I try to do without you go wrong / I’m confused about a lot of things / But not with my faith / So I’m depending on your Holy Ghost to guide the way / See I’m a sinner in the third degree / Ain’t afraid to admit it / ‘Cause I seen niggas worse than me…” –Scarface, “Someday.”
As a Christian who loves Hip Hop, I’ll admit that I’m not a fan of “Christian Rap.” In theory, Christian rappers should be appealing to me, but they just aren’t. I’ve never downloaded (legally or otherwise) one Christian Rap song. A Gospel song, yes. A Gospel song with a producer spitting a few bars, yes. But a whole Christian Rap song? Never. The genre, quite honestly, always seemed corny. There was one time, however, when I thought the meshing of my faith with Hip Hop could work. I was a junior in college when Kirk Franklin’s “Stomp,” featuring Salt of Salt-N-Pepa, hit the airwaves. I remember being proud that something, or rather someone, I loved was being recognized in the mainstream. God was cool and over 2 million consumers seemed to think so too. But I also remember walking into a club on my birthday weekend and witnessing men and women gyrating to the song. Huh...grinding to Gospel? Moments like that make me wonder if keeping things separate actually makes everything easier. Cleaner. DMX, who seems to be in a constant state of conflict, has been consistent in his message that he needs, believes and trusts Jesus to be his savior. Sure, he usually expresses this via one lone track on his super secular albums. But he’s comfortable and courageous enough to do what so many won’t. Rappers like Kanye West and Goodie Mob, who in their earlier works seemed cool ruffling feathers with talk about God, have largely moved on to sexier topics. In the end, I think it is easier to walk away than try and navigate through the “darkness.”  Why submerge yourself in something that is largely contradictory to your belief system. In the Bible, Amos 3:3 asks, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” Do recovering alcoholics hang out in bars? Certainly not the ones who have been able to maintain sobriety. By removing yourself from things that might not be inherently evil but provoke evil thoughts or desires, you give yourself a fighting chance at being righteous, being holy, being faithful.
Despite sometimes strong convictions, it seems most rappers who profess to be Christians are only comfortable sprinkling in a Psalms 23 here, a “God’s got my back” there and a shout out to “the man upstairs” at an award show. And I understand why. Like so many Christians who compartmentalize their lives (God on Sunday, sin every other day), I have somehow compartmentalized my music life. And I know it’s going to take more than just a change to my iTunes playlist to fix things. It’s going to take a change of heart.

Think on this...

Hey world! Been a long time since my last post...

The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary.

My confession:

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from, that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat...

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking.
In light of recent events... terrorists attack, school shootings, etc.. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school... The Bible says thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave, because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about.. And we said okay..

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.'

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

Are you laughing yet?

Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.

Pass it on if you think it has merit.

If not, then just discard it... no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.

My Best Regards, Honestly and respectfully,

Ben Stein

The prelude...

What's up world...

I recently read a blog posting by my boy Brandon Williams. It has inspired me to share my story with people as well. In light of the recent death of Chris Lighty, who was big in the music & entertainment industry, I realized that the topic of depression is not talked about enough. There are people from all walks of life & backgrounds who struggle with depression due to circumstances.

I've battled with depression in the past & very recently... I know how far depression can take you. I'm hoping I never have to experience it ever again. Our lives are valuable even if you don't think the ones you love value you, someone does. I'm just gonna leave it at that right now. My next posting will explain in more detail. I'm not afraid to be transparent about what is going on in my life. We all need an outlet to release our frustrations, hurts, pains, etc. Talk to you soon world.

Back to school...

What's up world...

Lately I've been contemplating going back to school... The more I think about it each day, my interest grows.           I rewind back a couple years in my mind thinking how this was my choice but quickly changed because I got a chance to DJ @ MGM Grand Detroit. This was easily the best thing to happen to me in my relatively short DJ career at that point. So, I put aside my aspirations to go back to school & focused all my attention on my career.

Fast forward to today... My career is sort of at a standstill... After thinking it over, school is my best option at this moment in life if I want to continue on this path. DJing is great, but I've always wanted to be well rounded & build a company that offers everything I'm interested in. I started my company, Authentic Productions, 5 years ago. The goal was to offer DJ services, Live Sound, Event Planning, Promotion & eventually Recording, Mixing & Mastering.

If this is to be realized, school is a must. Even though I have experience in live sound, I have no certifications or a degree. In order to do what I see myself doing in the future, I need those credentials. We currently live in a society where tons of value is placed on these credentials, especially in this field of sound & recording. Having my "papers" & gaining more experience is what will help me go further.

As much as I love my city of Detroit, the opportunities just aren't here for me right now. Time for me to move on & go elsewhere. My likely destination is Hollywood/LA. I've had my eye on Musician's Institute (www.mi.edu) for a few years. It was my choice a couple years back & now after doing some new research, it still is my top choice. I also had Institute of Audio Research in New York (www.audioschool.com) in my sights as well. Both are well known & respected in the music & entertainment community. Some of the best audio & recording engineers have come out of these two schools. There's no way I could pass up being around the best of the best in my fields of interest. Plus, I need a real challenge going forward & being away from what's familiar will keep me focused.

Unfortunately, there are just too many things here causing a distraction. I can no longer get motivated here. I think going away for awhile will benefit in the long run. I still plan to come back to Detroit but need some seasoning before I do. I'm really feeling like this is the change that I need right now. Once you can't find happiness where you are, sometimes it takes leaving to find what makes you happy. Being in familiar places with familiar people can stunt your growth sometimes because you can get comfortable where you are. I want to be uncomfortable. I want to be challenged. I want to learn more. I want to grow more. I want to excel. I want to succeed. AND I CAN. AND I WILL.

I'll know real soon when this will happen. I'm shooting for this fall, but have to get financial aid situated. January is the second option, but I'm pushing for option 1. I have about 8 weeks to get everything together with financial aid, my tuition deposits, touring the school & area, finding living space & taking my entrance exam. I'm excited about this new adventure. Wish me luck!

Thanks for listening...

Transition...

What's up world....

My last post was a few weeks ago... Since that posting, I've had a couple changes. I'm definitely in a transition in life.

I'll start with the not-so-good change... Unfortunately, I had to end my weekly open mic/showcase event, OpenMicJam. After celebrating 1 year of the event, due to financial restraints, I had to shut it down. It wasn't an easy decision.

I'm still struggling with it. Mainly due to the overwhelming responses from those who attended the event, I'm planning a possible re-launching of OpenMicJam. Trying to remain positive. I was completely drained. Weekly events can be stressful. They take tons of work, dedication & patience.

The other changes mostly deal with a new outlook on life. I've been dealing with people close to me being sick. When someone close to you is battling for their life, it makes take a look at your life & focus on what's really important. My dad & my best friend are both battling cancer. I lost one of my grandmother's to cancer. The toll it can have on a family is huge.

In addition to that, another good friend of mines has Lupus & fighting for her life daily while trying to raise my god-son. My whole focus has shifted now. Health is my biggest priority. And making myself available to those who need me.

My future is a new focus too. I'm actually considering going back to school now. I've always heard in order to accrue wealth you need multiple income streams. Finishing school ensures that for me. And keeps me in a position to help those close to me who need my help.

I'm believing everything will work out just fine. Thanks for listening. Peace.

Back on the scene...

What's up world!

I'm back on the scene again... There's been so many things keeping me from blogging but now that some things are back to normal, i'll blog a little more often.

I'm in a weird place in life right now & looking to put the pieces back together. It's crazy how things can change for the worst in the blink of an eye. It's even harder to remain positive & optimistic when things don't get better. Hardship can bring out the best & worst in you. The biggest hurdle is the war you have in your mind day in & day out...

I'm grateful for the friends that have remained in my corner & haven't given up on me. Whatever struggle you have shouldn't determine if you're worthy of having

a friendship. Unfortunately, some people base where you are in life as criteria for being your friend. Those are the people you let go. Anyway, I'm done rambling. Until next time, live in peace & love. BooG http://Twitter.com/boogsworld

Biggest Mistake Ever

Hey world...

This blog is one of regret. This past weekend I made the BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER. LITERALLY.

I've been DJing over a decade now, the last 4 years full-time, and until this past Friday I had never missed a gig/event. But somehow I put a wedding (I booked months ago) in my calendar on the wrong weekend & failed to double check or follow up with the client or my manager. The feeling I had when my manager called me can't even be described in words... It was beyond sickening. I'm @ my weekly gig setting up & get the worst news possible! I was in Downtown Detroit & this wedding reception was in Southgate, MI!! That's about an hour away!! Even though I found someone to go for me it was too little, too late!! The banquet hall had an on-site DJ who filled in, but that wasn't enough to make up for the HUGE mistake that was made. Even though it was an honest mistake, it was a HORRIBLE one.

I feel so bad for the bride & groom. I know how much weddings mean to people. I've always loved to book weddings because of the festive nature & the theme of a lifetime of love. These are the type of events that people remember forever. And I ruined that for this couple. May 11, 2012 will always be a date that sticks with me as a reminder to NEVER let this happen again. This was the first & last time something like this will occur. My heartfelt apology goes out to Annetra Jones for leaving a bad taste in her mouth & ruining her special day that she put so much time & effort into. AND I want to apologize to my former classmate Ane Moore (who referred me) for making her look bad. I hope they find it in your hearts to forgive me.

Been a long time...

What's up world!

Been a long time since the last blog... Seems like every time I've set my mind to post regularly, something has interfered. This thing called life can have so many hurdles! I have no complaints though... Hopefully this is the start of the consistency I'd like to have.

So many things have happened since my last post. I'll start with a positive... First, I finally received word that I'll be going on tour this fall with Hip Hop Artist, Mahogany Jones via American Voices! We auditioned back in February in St. Louis vying for 1 of 12 selections being made out of 40 groups! Honestly, this has been the best news I've received all year & I'm so thankful for this opportunity! Not only will we be doing shows, but we'll be doing workshops for kids between the ages of 9 & 12 years old! Having an opportunity to do what I love & impact lives is unbelievable!! I'm really excited & looking forward to the other doors that may open because of this tour abroad!! If you want more info, go to www.americanvoices.org to see what I'll be doing.

Second, I've been asked to travel & perform with Singer/Songwriter Joe Pore as well!!! I'm excited about this too!!! Joe Pore is an awesome performer & I'm honored that he'd even consider me being a part of what he's doing as an artist. If you're not familiar with his name now, you will be!! He currently has a single on iTunes & is working on his first full length project!! I'll keep you posted!! He was a part of the group 7 Mile that released an album in the late 90's!! He was a youngin' back then lol! I still have that cd too!! I was bumping it hard back in the day!!

Lastly, I'm happy to announce my Open Mic Jam event will be celebrating 1 year of its existence next month!!! This has been a year of ups & downs, but well worth it!! I've learned so much & looking forward to improving the event & providing even more exposure for all the artists that perform there!! We'll be celebrating each Wednesday in June with special performances every week!! I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!!

I'm not going to highlight the things that went wrong or not according to my plans... I'm not letting these things hinder me or my progress. I thank GOD for giving me strength to endure when I wanted to give up. I'm thankful for having a resilient spirit. I refuse to let anything stop me from achieving the goals I've set for myself. Most importantly, I won't let anything keep me from fulfilling GOD's purpose for my life. If you can dream it, you can achieve it!

Thanks for listening...

The Weekend Recap

What's up world!!

It's been a week since my last entry! Miss me yet?? No?? Probably not! LOL! It's ok... One day I'll create enough buzz to make people miss me. Until then I'll just hold on to my hope that someone does... LOL!

Anyway, I had an exciting weekend & decided to share it with YOU! Awesome, right?!?! Uh, yeah... Don't answer that! LOL!

I'll start with Thursday night since it's the "official" start of the weekend now... I'll begin by saying that there are some unbelievably gorgeous women in this world & I got to see first hand Thursday night! Thanks to my wonderful homie Iantha Lane, I had the opportunity of entertaining her fellow show circuit models all evening @ Rounds On The Square in Downtown Detroit. For those who are from Detroit, you may remember it as Taste Pizza Bar. For those of you who aren't from Detroit & not aware of this establishment, it's a restaurant & lounge & owned by minorities!!!

This was the first time I'd ever seen a room full of women that were just drop-dead fine!! Lawd have mercy!! LOL!! If you weren't there, you really missed out!! So, clearly, you can tell I enjoyed the scenery! LOL!! That's all it was for me though... When I'm working that's the only perk. And I usually have the best view! Some of my followers know what I'm talking about...

The event was called "Models, Bottles & Music" & this was the 5th year it was held here in Detroit. I've had the pleasure of being the DJ the last 2 years. I will go on record by saying that this was the most diverse crowd & one of the best to play for! Rounds was packed from the time I started until it was time to go!! And I made some great connects in the process. Shout out to my manager, Kris Crosby, who helped make this happen & stayed the majority of the event even after working 8+ hours at his day job!! Kudos to you sir!!!

Special thanks goes to Ms. Iantha Lane for continuing to consider me for this great event. I'm looking forward to next year & believe it'll be even better than this year!! And shout out to LA's Jada Storm too!! She sent me a dope song to spin!! I just love new music & meeting new artists!!

So, there's nothing to say about Friday... It ended up being a chill night mostly. I did get to see the lovely Melody Fresh who was kicking off her birthday @ L!V Resto Lounge in Downtown Detroit that night! Due to that, that made Friday a success!! It's always a good time when Melody Fresh is around!!

Now moving on to Saturday... It was the return of the popular Saturday Nite Cipher series founded by Detroitks super couple, Saxappeal & Ideeyah!!! This was the kickoff night @ The Untitled Bottega in Downtown Detroit which is owned & operated by Flaco Shalom & Lady L! In addition to Saxappeal & Ideeyah hosting on this night, I had the pleasure of rocking with some of Detroit's best musicians!! On this night, we had Brandon Williams, Tony Gordon & Damon Warmack. When you put these guys with Saxappeal you get an electrifying energy & vibe!! And the best thing is, we always have a blast!! They are some of the funniest guys I know & we had plenty of laughs Saturday night!

Not only did we have plenty of laughs, but we got to enjoy the best $2 Tacos I've EVER HAD courtesy of Two Dollar Tacos!!! In order for you to even to understand where I'm coming from, you have to visit her blog @ http://twodollartacos.blogspot.com & when you see the pics of these delightful appetizers you'll instantly want to try one. And they look just like the pictures in the blog! I kid you not!!

Now, I'm such a food fanatic... The sample that was given to me that night totally blew me away! I was a fan instantly!! It was so serious for me, I ranted about these tacos for at least an hour on twitter after the event!! These tacos are just simply amazing!!! I couldn't wait to taste them again! I was so elated when Flaco asked me to DJ for their open mic event, Untitled Sessions. I didn't eat all day Sunday so I could have room to smash as many tacos as I could!!! Seriously.

Before she even set-up, I was putting my order in! I felt like a kid in the penny candy store!! And the moment I was able to partake of the tacos, I was in heaven!! She did not disappoint me!!! I am now a faithful & loyal customer of Two Dollar Tacos. I'm even hoping she can bring them to one of my events as well... And I'm happy to say, it looks promising!!! As you can see, I'm still hype!!! LOL!!!

Shout out to Flaco Shalom & Lady L for having me! The Untitled Sessions was off the chain!! It's great to see people come together & enjoy music & art!! What Do You Want?

What's up world...

I'm attempting to post more consistently this year. I think I'll be successful this time because my understanding of blogs has expanded. I use to feel that every blog I wrote had to be long or it had to be story-like... Well, now I see that it's not just that but simply a way for me to share info, big or small. And every blog I write doesn't have to be thought-provoking either. So... You'll be getting a plethora of info throughout this year via my own opinions or someone else's. And stories & highlights of people, not only in my community, but all around the world. I hope that the things I post are entertaining as well as educational & encouraging.

Now on to the subject...lol

What do you want in life? Have you made up in your mind what you want & need? Speaking for myself personally, I know what I want in life. I realized that in the past I got in my own way because I was always on the fence about things. Indecisiveness will keep you from being successful. Knowing what you want allows you to be decisive. It also fosters the focus you need to get what you want. And even if you don't particularly know how to get what you want, the fact that you know can create the opportunity for someone else to help direct or guide you. If you don't know what you want or where you want to go or what you want to do, I implore you to figure it out! Being in limbo is not cool.

That's all I have for today. Thanks for listening & feel free to share with others.

Jack Of All Trades

What's up world...

Here's another email I wanted to share that I think could impact someone. It definitely caused me to alter my views on this subject. Enjoy!

You weren’t born to do everything – Dr. Myles Munroe

When a person tries to do everything, he ends up becoming a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none. I’m sure you know someone who has multi-gifts but seem to not be making any strides at success. No matter how many gifts you have don’t let them distract you. You must make a decision for where you want to go and what you want completed. Concentrate on one or two gifts and pursue them with all you have. Don’t worry about losing the other gifts. If you perfect the primary gift God has given you, it will make room for you in this world and the other gifts will follow. God will not waste what He has given you. You were not born to do everything, make a decision and PURSUE!

Professional Starters...???

What's up world!

Hope all is well your way... This is another email I received that I decided to share. Hope it helps someone.

Professional Starters are people who are always beginning something, but never finish anything... For example, they have books they’ve never finished, yet they keep starting new ones. Everything you don’t finish will distract you or detour you from finishing other important projects in your life. Unfinished business is killing your dream, it’s killing your vision and it’s haunting you throughout your life. Do you have a Dream? If so, FINISH!

What's up world!

Here's a message I received this morning & I wanted to share with you. Enjoy!

You can DO IT! During the BIG GAMES throughout my playing career, the games would be close. The closer the game the harder we would have to work and push for every inch of the field. During the TV timeouts my coach would tell us, You can DO IT! There’s nothing more encouraging than hearing the words you can DO IT from someone you admire, respect and love.

During those tough times in your life, who is telling you, You can DO IT?

Who has your back whether you win or lose?

You can DO IT today. God is always faithful, he will never leave you nor forsake you. God is simply telling you today, that YOU CAN DO IT! Your dream was completed before you were born. He built you for this, now let’s put what you have into motion and make a difference.

YOU CAN DO IT!

Communication is VITAL

What's up world...

This is blog #2 today... I had some inspiration...

I recently had talks with a few different people & the main theme from these conversations were communication. There always seems to be a gap in that area especially when issues arise. If communication was where it needed to be, there wouldn't be so many relational (personal & business) problems. I've experienced issues with people because communication was lacking. In addition to that, listening skills are poor too. Due to this, assumptions are always present. The majority of problems we deal with wouldn't even be an issue if our communication was good & we actually listened.

It's very frustrating when you realize a problem has occured because of bad communication or the lack thereof... Life would run so much smoother if we learned to communicate better. I just don't understand why communicating is so difficult. We have so many outlets/resources available to us to convey a message to someone. There's text messaging, you can make a phone call, we have social media & you can email. There's ABSOLUTELY no reason why you can't communicate with anyone at any given time. Business & personal relationships can suffer if communication is not a priority.

I guarantee that your life would be a lot better if you have good communication. There's no room for mix-ups, misunderstandings, confusion or drama. COMMUNICATE!!! It's not rocket science...

Well that's all I have for now... Thanks for listening.

Excuses

What's up world!

I got an email today that I thought had a great message & decided I'd share it with YOU! I hope you get something from it & feel free to share it with others...

This excerpt is courtesy of Pastor Timothy Shockley, Jr.

Excuses are potholes to your destiny. Excuses delay the promises of your future. I have learned that the ones who make the most excuses are the ones who are always stuck or always trying to make it.You don’t have time for excuses, every time you make a excuse, someone is making a move. You make another excuse someone else is making a move, the days pass, the months pass and the years pass and you remain STUCK! Eliminate the excuses and make the adjustment to move past the things that are holding you down. I will not lie, it will be tough, it’s going to be hard and will have to face some challenges you have never faced before. But you can do it, and with the help of the ALMIGHTY GOD, YOU WILL DO IT!

NO EXCUSES!

A New Year!

What's up world!!!

I'm going to start of by saying Happy New Year!!!

I know I'm a week late but, this is officially my first blog of 2012 & I wanted to get that celebratory message out of the way...lol! Anyway, I'm glad that 2012 is here. 2011 was probably thee most difficult year I've ever had... I endured a failed relationship, lost some friends, fell out with family members, lost a major gig, made some very questionable decisions, failed to plan, got hurt & hurt some people. As you can see, a lot went on... There are other things I could mention but won't because of confidentiality & because some things just need to remain private.

Inspite all of the crazy situations that occurred, I made it to a new year! I'm healthy, in my right mind & still doing what I love to do! Now I don't want you to think that nothing good happened last year. There was plenty to be happy about but unfortunately the bad outweighed the good. I'm thankful that all the bad can be turned around & I have a new slate. I'm really excited about all the things that are happening & for what's going to happen.

The year didn't start how I imagined it would, but I have no complaints. I have a renewed focus this year. This will be the year I take advantage of ALL opportunities that come my way. And I'm encouraging others to do the same. The season that is upon us, requires that we be prepared to be in position for the doors that WILL open. Take notice of the emphasis on WILL. Doors WILL open & if you're not ready or not in position or don't seize it while it's available, you may not get another opportunity. PLEASE do not let things pass you by. I repeat... PLEASE DO NOT LET THINGS PASS YOU BY.

This pertains to your career, your relationships & anything else that may require a life-changing decision. I encourage you to take risks that you haven't in the past. Don't allow fear or doubt to keep you from receiving your blessings. Pursue your passion with everything you got! The things that you sow, you will reap! Do more. Be more.

Live free this year. Remove the limitations. THIS IS YOUR TIME.

Hope I've inspired or encouraged someone. Thanks for listening & feel free to share with others.
